June Allotment Jobs

June is a fantastic month on the allotment, with long days, warmer weather and plants growing at full speed. Keeping up with a few regular jobs now will help your crops thrive throughout the summer.

☀️ Here are our top tips for June:

  • 🌱 Keep weeding and hoeing regularly to stop weeds competing with your crops.
  • 💧 Water deeply during dry spells to encourage strong, healthy root growth.
  • 🌿 Break up the soil surface occasionally to help water soak in more easily.
  • ✂️ Thin out overcrowded seedlings to give each plant plenty of room to grow.
  • 🫘 Support climbing beans and peas with sturdy canes or frames before they get too tall.
  • 🐛 Check your plants regularly for pests and diseases so you can deal with any problems early.
  • 🌞 Water in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation and keep plants happy.
  • 🥕 Continue sowing little and often for a steady harvest throughout the season.

June is all about keeping your allotment growing strong while making the most of the longer days.

This month’s key jobs include:

  • Weed beds regularly to keep plants healthy and productive.
  • Plant out hardened-off seedlings into their final growing positions.
  • Feed the soil with compost or mulch around established crops.
  • Water thoroughly during warm weather, especially containers and raised beds.
  • Thin seedlings to improve airflow and reduce overcrowding.
  • Install supports for climbing beans, peas and other vigorous growers.
  • Harvest early crops such as lettuce, spinach, radish and salad leaves.
  • Reuse empty beds by sowing quick-growing vegetables.
  • Keep an eye out for slugs, aphids and other common summer pests.
