Leeds allotment gardeners have done the city and allotment movement proud!
Twelve volunteers from the Leeds & District Allotment Gardeners Federation were awarded a Best in Show at Britain’s no.1 and very prestigious Harrogate Spring Flower Show.
The innovative ‘Techno Allotment Garden‘ was a huge success with the crowds. There was something for everyone: cheap under-soil heating using an old radiator and an ice cream tub, a solar-voltaic system for free electricity and many other innovative ideas.
The robotic scarecrow was also a huge success with the children and adults alike, with its flashing eyes and waving arms. There was lots for the children to participate in, with Guess the Scarecrow’s Name, a lucky dip and seed planting. Some of the finer details such as nesting birds and mice and a couple of robins also intrigued our younger visitors.
This was in addition to all the growing fruit and vegetables which had been very difficult to prepare for the show due to the cold weather.
Despite reservations about being prepared on time the demonstration allotment garden looked very attractive with hundreds of positive comments from professional growers.
This success follows the double gold award achieved at last year’s Great Yorkshire Show where the Federation plan to exhibit again.
